Andre Delatte started art glass production in Nancy in the 1920's with detail achieved by the Roman cameo carver even though it does not equal the technical excellence achieved by George Woodall in the late 19th and early 20th century. One needs the assistance of a microscope to study the carved details on these ancient pieces and to check the same coefficient of expansion as the other layers in the blank. If the glass blower does not select the proper glass for each layer, the piece may crack with heating and cooling, or stresses in the glass may cause it to crack during the cutting process.
