Russian glass manufacturing |
In Russia, glass manufacturing existed from time immemorial. But in the pre-Christian period, glass manufacturers worked as jewelers, outputting beads, rings, bracelets etc. Glass manufacturing significantly gained in scope in the 9-1Oth centuries. When carrying out excavations in the towns of Kiev, Kostroma and Ryazan, archeologists unearthed glass-blowing workshops and locally produced utensils of greenish glass. Their composition differed from that of Syrian or Byzantine glassware. Moreover, colored smalt used for mosaic was produced in abundance in Kiev Russia.
The flowering of glass manufacturing, however, didn't last long. Under the Mongol rule, the business practically terminated, with a period of its Renaissance restarting only in the 17-18th centuries thank to the activity of the outstanding Russian scientist, Mikhailo Lomonosov.
